New search engines have come and gone during the history of the internet. There is a new engine that seems to pop up every few months, but the features don’t differentiate itself from the larger, more popular engines, such as Google, Bing and Yahoo, making it almost pointless to switch search engines for the start up.


However, one of the newest websites to throw their hat into the ring is YaCy. This search engine actually take on a different approach than the other search engines individuals are familiar with, giving it a chance to survive (unless it is eventually bought out by one of the larger search engine options).


For starters, YaCy actually requires a download, so it is able to run directly off of a computer, instead of forcing individuals to navigate to the specific website (it is available for Windows, Mac and Linux computers). Once installed, it is actually able to encrypt all Web searches, so third parties are not able to look up searches performed on your computer. This is a rather nice feature, especially if you are tired of receiving spam mail in an email account, simply because you performed a specific search on Google.


YaCy is also capable of creating a specific search profile for each user. This allows you to return to previous searches and even add to the content. This way, you are never left scratching your head, wondering what you searched during a previous session. Of course, there is always the option for removing specific content from the search field, in case you don’t want to have the search results come up on future searches, or if you just didn’t like what came up.


YaCy is still in the start up phase, so there is no guarantee it is going to last (or even be able to compete with the larger brands), but YaCy provides something different for its users, so it might just have a niche it can work itself into.

How to Install Windows 8

Check out Windows 8 with the Developer Preview

Microsoft has just released their Windows 8 Developer Preview. If you are curious how Windows 8 performs, you can install the Windows 8 Developer Preview for free. You can sample this latest operating system on your laptop or PC. Minimum requirements include 32-bit file handling as the download is large and 1024 minimum RAM. Here are the steps for Windows 8 installation:

Step 1 Downloading Options

Download Windows 8 Developer Preview on your computer.

Click a link depending on if your computer is 64bit or 32bit and save the .iso file to your computer:

Windows 8 Developer Preview 32bit

If you want to install it on your PC or laptop, use disc to burn the ISO file. Windows 7 will install it for you, but if you are running Windows XP or Vista, you need a third party tool called ImgBurn to create the Windows 8.

Also, if you do not have a spare hardware, you can use a free program called VirtualBox.
Download and install the latest version of VirtualBox from virtualbox.org. Next, run the VirtualBox.

Then launch the program by clicking on the New Button. Then, click Next.

Step 2 Setting up the virtual machine

Name the virtual machine, for instance, Windows 8. Then, select Microsoft Windows as the operating system, and choose Other Windows for the version. Click Next.

Choose how much RAM for the virtual machine you would like to have. Give it 1024 MB. Click Next.

Step 3 Set Up

Continue to click Next to accept all default settings for the Virtual Hard Disk option, Create New Virtual Disk option, and Dynamically Allocated option. Click Next to create your virtual machine. Then right click on your new virtual machine, and click Settings, and choose Storage.

Right-click “IDE Controller”, click “Add CD/DVD, select Choose Disk, and point the program at your Developer Preview ISO file and click Open.

Right-click the other CD icon labeled, “Empty”, and click Remove. Click OK.

Double-click the new virtual machine to launch it. The message about your keyboard and mouse capturing options will pop-up. Click OK to clear it.

When setup is complete, your PC will reboot to launch Windows 8 for the first time. If the installation disc asks to “press any key” to boot from it, ignore it, otherwise you will start the installation process again.

Remove the disc from your PC. If you are in VirtualBox, return to the virtual machine’s Storage settings, right-click the ISO file under the IDE Controller, and select Remove.

Step 4 Run

In Windows 8, open on the lock screen. Hold down the left mouse button and drag upward to reveal the logon window. Enter your password and click Submit.
Metro-style user interface will appear, with tiles for Explorer, IE, Control Panel and more. Click the Desktop to see the old-style Windows desktop. Right-click this, then select Screen Resolution, making sure you are using the highest resolution.
When done, move your mouse to the bottom-left corner and click the Start button. You will see the main screen.

Now, start exploring your Windows 8 with these steps:

1. First, scroll to the right to see the Metro-style apps. Click one of the app tiles to launch it.

2. You can customize your Start screen by dragging the files to rearrange them in any position you like. You can also right-click these tiles to view more options. Open the Internet Explorer app to get online with IE10. Move the mouse cursor to the bottom-left of the screen for more options.

4. You can always press the Windows key to return to your home screen, if you are lost at any point.

5. When you complete your tour of Windows 8, click your username at the top-right, then select Log Off.

6. Use the mouse scroll wheel to reveal the log on screen again, and then click the icon at the bottom right of the screen and Shut Down.

The Windows 8 installation steps are rather long, but it is worth it to see what it brings for virtualization. This OS will be completed in mid 2012, and some of the elements are subject to change before the final release. Meanwhile, enjoy your Windows 8 Developer Preview version.

Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8

Is Microsoft making any progress in the browser battle?

We have begun analyzing the developer version of Windows 8 which was released recently. There are many different features of Windows 8 that we plan on writing about. The first feature that we are going to write about was an obvious choice. We immediately recognized that Internet Explorer 10 comes standard with Windows 8.

Of course this will excited a lot of people who are interested in new technology including web browsers. However, this new version of Internet Explorer does not seem like much of an improvement over the previous version, Internet Explorer 9. We must admit however that we are very biased in regards to Internet Explorer. We at Best Antivirus 2012 typically use Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari. Internet Explorer is our last choice of personal browsers.

At first glance it looked like a replica of Internet Explorer 9. The tabs are boxed in Internet Explorer 10 exactly as they are in Internet Explorer 9. The ability to search in the address bar is also available in both versions. Of course by default Bing is the default search engine for Internet Explorer 10 and must be changed manually to Google or another search provider of your choosing if you decide not to use Bing.

The Forward and Back arrows are a replica as well as the Settings, Home and Favorites icons on the far right hand side. As far as we are concerned the only thing that seems to separate Internet Explorer 10 from Internet Explorer 9 is minor aesthetics and some unnoticeable graphic changes. Quite frankly this may simply be an attempt by Microsoft to cause some excitement by having the name Internet Explorer 10 circulating around the web in conjunction with Windows 8.

Of course the inner programming of Internet Explorer 10 is much different than Internet Explorer 9. Better web graphics handling, HTML5 rendering and the overall advancement towards the ability to properly display future feature rich web pages. Internet Explorer has been notorious with the inability to conform to industry standards and the somewhat inability to display web pages properly. Hopefully Internet Explorer 10 gets it this time.

Everyone must remember that the version of Internet Explorer 10 we are critiquing is a developer preview. It is definitely not the finished product. We are sure that Microsoft will be adding much more to Internet Explorer 10 before the official release of Windows 8. Lets hope that this rather bland upgrade that Internet Explorer 10 appears to be right now is going to change come official release.

Windows 8: Microsoft’s New OS

Will this new version of Windows live up to the expectations?

The new release by Microsoft last week has been turning a lot heads in the tech community and giving the experts second thoughts about this new operating system.

The full version of the operating system by Microsoft, which is scheduled to be released next year, is getting a lot of buzz in the tech community for its sleek and colorful designs – something Microsoft products are not typically known for.

The Windows 8 developer release has been available for since last week and at first glance it looks completely different from any of the prior Windows operating systems. It boasts big colorful tiles similar to their tablet and smart phone counterparts. The similarity to their mobile brands is obvious. Microsoft is desperately looking to gain market share in the mobile marketplace.

Expect to see plenty of new apps for this operating system. Windows 8 will be giving the independent developer community the opportunity to submit their own apps to an app marketplace, similar to the method found with itunes and android. The worlds most popular operating system is making some bold moves in the right direction with this new version of Windows. Below is a screen capture of one of the several apps available in the developer version. Gallery of Memories is a virtual scrap book which comes standard with Windows 8.

Although the new release has been quite buggy, expect to see a more polished version when it is released early next fall. However, this big addition for Microsoft has been needed for quite sometime now. With Apple’s increasing market share in the computer market and Apple’s complete dominance in the tablet market, it is time for Microsoft to make some bold moves. It is obviously too soon to tell if this will be the game changer for Microsoft, but it is certainly a move in the right direction.

Below is a screen show of the weather app available in Windows 8. After entering your location information during setup, Windows will automatically connect to the internet and gather the local weather information. This isn’t much of a revolutionary app, but it does have some nice features including a live background showing similar weather conditions.

We plan on sharing much more information on the Windows 8 in future blog posts. We are currently running more tests on the new operating system and will be reporting all of our findings, good or bad. Also, on future posts we plan on examining the new security features for Windows 8 and which antivirus program is best suited for this operating system.
